Abstract:
It is generally accepted that mitochondrial numbers/mass and activity are coordinated in a cell or tissue specific
manner to ensure optimal growth and development. While it has been established that transcript and protein abundance
for mitochondrial functions change in a tissue specific manner, and under stress, the signaling pathways and effectors
that underlie these pathways are not well described at a molecular level. Outlined here is our current knowledge of
the signaling pathways between the mitochondrion and the nucleus; under adverse environmental conditions. The identity
of several components have now being elucidated. It can be concluded that mitochondrial function is not only integrated
intimately with a variety of known cellular signaling pathways, in fact mitochondria initiate stress signaling pathways
that are essential for stress responses.
