1995年中国科学院植物研究所博士研究生毕业并获理学博士学位;1995至1997年在中国科学院昆明植物研究所做博士后研究。1999年在美国哈佛大学和密苏里植物园合作开展中国植物志英文版瑞香科等五个科的研究与编写工作。2001年在英国爱丁堡大学细胞和分子生物学实验室从事花对称性CYCLOIDEA功能基因的分子发育与进化合作研究。2007年赴美国诺贝基金会植物生物学研究所(Plant Biology Division, Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation) 从事Medicago幼苗NPA化学诱导变异规律及其相关功能基因研究。
主要从事植物系统学、形态发生学、进化发育生物学研究。植物系统学研究主要对世界范围内的苦苣苔科(Gesneriaceae)植物开展从形态分类,个体发育,生物地理到分子系统学的多层面研究,旨在全面重建苦苣苔科植物的系统发育。在花对称性功能基因的进化发育生物学研究方面,通过对花对称性基因的表达模式、功能、相互作用及基因间调控关系的比较研究,揭示植物类群中花对称性变异式样与相关功能基因发生变化的相关关系,并探讨是如何受这些基因调控的以及不同的表达模式和调控途径的内在联系和进化机制;从而在深入了解这些花对称性功能基因的分子进化和表型进化关系的基础上构建相关植物类群花对称性的进化发育(Evo-devo)式样。在花器官发育发面的进化发育生物学研究方面,通过相关基因的表达、功能和调控研究,揭示不同类群中相关基因的功能分化与进化机制。在基因可变剪接的进化生物学研究方面,通过靶向高通量测序及可翻译组研究,揭示可变剪接对基因的功能及植物性状的调控机制。
已在国内外核心学术刊物上如National Science Review,Nature Communications, Molecular Biology and Evolution, plant cell, Plant Physiology, New Phytologist, Development genes and Evolution, Systematic Botany, Plant Systematics and Evolution, Diversity and Distributions, Plant Biology,International Journal of Molecular Sciences以及Journal of Systematics and Evolution (植物分类学报) 等期刊发表论文70余篇;出版专著6部。目前任Journal of Systematics and Evolution (植物分类学报) 责任编委以及Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, Systematic Botany, Annales Botanici Fennici和 Novon的外审专家成员。与欧洲和美国相关领域的专家具有广泛的联系和长期合作关系。
