1983年毕业于湖南省林业学校林学专业,1993年和1997年在中国科学院植物研究所分别获得硕士和博士学位。1999年和2002年分别在英国皇家植物园邱园和美国密苏里植物园合作研究。现任国际自然保护联盟IUCN兰花专家组OSG亚洲区委员会主席、国际兰花委员会(世界兰花大会)成员、中国野生植物保护学会植物可持续发展专业委员会主席。1991年获林业部部级科技进步三等奖(第一完成人),1993年获湖南省林业厅科技进步三等奖(第三完成人),1994年获林业部部级科技进步三等奖(第三完成人),1999年获中国科学院院长奖学金特别奖,2001年获中国科学院自然科学奖一等奖(第四完成人),2002年获国家自然科学奖二等奖(第四完成人),2019年获国家科技进步奖二等奖(第五完成人)。在Nature、Nature Genetics、Current Biology、Functional Ecolgoy、Molecular Ecology、Molecualr Phylogenetics and Evolution、Annals of Botany、Biological Conservation等期刊发表论文158篇,科普文章37篇;参与专著编写18部。已培养硕士研究生29名,博士研究生23名,合作指导博士后1名。
主要研究工作:
1. 神经传粉生物学或神经传粉生态学Neuropollination Biology or Neuropollination Ecology
以被子植物与传粉者关系为研究对象,利用神经生物学的理论和方法,研究传粉者对花的认知问题,包括传粉者神经系统对花信号的接收、加工、存储、提取和遗忘等学习记忆机制,探索传粉者神经系统对花信号天生的趋向性行为反应,以及通过后天强大学习能力将花信号与报酬相联系导致趋向性行为的改变等两种行为反应范式,探讨传粉行为对动植物协同进化和生态适应的关键信号调控和进化适应作用。
目前以传粉果蝇作为研究平台,研究花气味对传粉果蝇神经系统作用的式样及机制,以及对传粉者传粉行为决策的影响及其机制。在此基础上,尝试将传粉果蝇响应花气味的神经特点和规律应用到蜜蜂传粉行为中,为解决生态系统与农业系统面临的传粉者不足添砖加瓦。
2. 兰科植物和传粉者基因组进化与物种形成
生物的适应性进化与物种形成是生物进化过程中的重要组成部分。兰科植物是被子植物中物种多样性最丰富的类群之一,其与传粉者的互作对兰科植物的适应性进化和物种形成具有重要作用。在兰科植物全基因组(参与深圳兰科中心的工作)数据基础上,重点研究兰科植物和传粉者的进化式样以及两者在形态、时间和空间等多层面的协同进化关系;寻找并明确与兰科植物传粉和交配系统、以及传粉者传粉行为相关的性状和相应的基因或基因家族,揭示其进化式样和进化机制。
3. 植物保育
野生兰科植物是生物多样性保护中的“旗舰”类群,同时又是重要的经济植物。以药用兰科植物为平台,关注自然环境下药用或观赏兰科植物人工种群或自然种群的遗传多样性动态变化模式和机理,以及人工种群与传粉昆虫和共生真菌相互作用关系的变化式样和机制。同时,围绕兰科植物产业发展和多样性保育的有机整合,促进更多相关企业和个人参与到兰科植物多样性保育工作中等方面开展工作。
